Every English learner wants to improve their vocabulary. As we explained in our post on prefixes, you can grow your vocabulary power quickly and efficiently by learning word parts!

English borrows many words and word parts from other languages, especially Latin and Greek (as we explained here). These word parts include prefixes, roots, and suffixes. The same word parts are often used in many words, so if you know some common ones, it will be easier to figure out the meanings of new words.

A suffix is added to the end of a word to change its meaning, and often its part of speech as well.

KIND + -NESS (state) = KINDNESS (kind state)

Learn more common suffixes in the slideshow below. If you missed it, also check out our slideshow on English prefixes. Soon we’ll also featured common word roots to improve your English vocabulary.
